Late last year, Power NI, part of Energia Group, sponsored the Energy Saving Trust's Energy Saving Week schools' challenge for a second year in a row.
During Energy Saving Week, the Energy Saving Trust, the Housing Executive (Home Energy Conservation Authority), Power NI and other partners took part in a campaign to promote energy savings and carbon reduction. Along with the Energy Savings Trust’s Energy Saving Week campaign, they invited schools across NI to take part in a schools’ challenge to see how much CO2 could be saved through energy saving changes.
Energy Saving Week has successfully been running for over 20 years now, with the aim to encourage people to reduce the amount of energy and water they use. Power NI was delighted to get involved again, sponsoring the £1,000 first prize for the winners to spend on a sustainability project for their school.
St Patrick's Primary School, Omagh, were awarded first prize as they saved the highest amount of CO2 out of all the schools that took part. They will be using their prize money for their next sustainability project.
Janine O’Donnell, Energy Services Programme Manager at Power NI, and Darryn Mallon from the Energy Saving Trust, both visited St Patricks Primary School to find out their plans for their prize money and Power NI also gifted all the pupils a Green Guardians activity pack.
Janine commented: “St Patricks were delighted to be Power NI’s Energy Saving Week competition winners. They plan to use the £1,000 prize money towards developing an outdoor classroom to further enhance the school’s outdoor environment.”
